Bobby Shmurda - Hot N*gga

Producer: Bobby Shmurda
Title: Hot N*gga
Date: July 25th 2014
Time: 3 minutes 19 seconds

Summary: The music video I chose was Bobby Shmurda - Hot N*gga. This music video was sang by one man called Bobby Shmurda who a Hip Hop artist, who got arrested last year due to the fact that New York City Police arrested "Pollard" (Bobby) and charged him as this track is about how he had conspiracy to commit murder, weapons possession, and reckless endangerment. So due to this he hasn't been producing music recently.

Type of Video: This video is a performance based clip. One thing I noticed was that the music video had a bit of dancing going on. In addition I would say that the music video was also narrative based as he was talking about how he was going to go about with a specific situation. The theme portrayed is gang. The reason why I wold say this is because if you were to listen you to lyrics, you would notice that Bobby is taking about gang life, money and so on which sums up his life. Another reason why I would say this is due to the cigarettes/weed and the drinking of alcohol. Later on after this song was released, Bobby was arrested as in his lyrics, he admitted that he committed murder.

Representation: I would say that Bobby is represented as a disruptive individual who doesn't take life serious as he is preaching about drugs and killings and so one. In addition, by looking at this music video, he is portrayed as an unorganised person as the video just looks like random shots were put together. If we were to look at the costumes worn, they are all causal. The most worn items were jeans, a hat and a top. This could connote that these items are in trend or it could connote that it is the most worn items within this age group which is correct.

Lip Syncing: In this clip lip syncing was definitely used as the music was pre-recorded and sang on top. In addition there is part of the music video where he wasnt rapping in time with the song, which then gave it away and it also made the music video look messy and unorganised. However, there was parts where he was just dancing.

Target Audience: By looking at this music video, I feel as if the target audience are black males whose age is ranging from 16-19 years old. The reason why I say this is because the key aspects being shown in the music video is drugs, alcohol, jail and so on. I would also say this because at this age you are legal to drink, so they would be able to relate more and lastly this is the age where people ate more disruptive. So due to this it would encourage people to buy the record as some boys can relate to his situation and are into songs that involve gang related stuff.

Technological Aspects: During the music video there was a lot of editing  In this music video there was a lot of cutting used which made everything go with the beat in the song.. Instead of zooming in, there was uses of scenes which cut really quickly and cutted closer and closer towards the artist. This then made the video look more livier. Throughout the music video hand held camera movements were used in a close up and mid shot. Which made the music video look very shaky and some parts the video was out of focus, so due to this the camera could have been set on automatic and not manual.  In addition a lot of white flashes were used as a transition which lead to another shot between "0:03-0:12". At "3:09" there was a use of the dissolve effect" and lastly the cutting speed is not as fast. The word "Bobby Shmurda" and "Hot Nigga" were also embedded into one of the shots. It came after a white flash and left after a white flash. In the music video, there was two locations used. One was near houses and one looked like it was near a field and was taken at night. By looking at the mise-en-scene, there were quite a few cars, there was a white, black and red car. This could have connoted their wealth

Ideas: When it comes to ideas, I don't think I would take any ideas from this music video, as it looks very unprofessional. There wasn't aspects in the video that you would normally see in hip hop music videos. The only camera technique I saw was hand held which looked very messy. However, I feel as if I would take the fast cutting technique and the white flash effect to use it my music video as it didnt make the music video look boring and it caught my attention.

Comments

  1. This is a little brief, also the parts I watched cut a fair amount? (lots of editing! and cutting to beat of track)There is a lot of hand held though you are right. What about detail to analysis? Mise-en-scene?

Now there are 3 case studies, but none have that much detail to them.
